Mari Jászai (1850–1926), actress. Autograph letter to Ferenc Szécsi, writer-journalist, and his wife, addressed Drágáim! (My Dearest Ones!).""
At the beginning, Jászai gives advice about writing (likely in connection with the comedy Utazás az özvegység felé / Journey Towards Widowhood, published the following year), then she raves about Széchenyi’s Blick. The most engaging part of the lengthy letter is her detailed account of a meeting with General Artúr Görgey. When she asked how he endured being regarded as a traitor, he allegedly replied: "Do not believe that my suffering was wasted, or my endurance in vain, the great majority of the nation would have fallen into utter despair had they known we were defeated. Their belief that Hungary had to be betrayed for her enemies to prevail sustained their faith and strength." Interestingly, the version published in his memoirs differs significantly from this.
6 written pages. Dated Szalatna, July 9, 1903 (Jászai often stayed at Jenő Hubay’s estate in Nagyszalatna, now a district of Losonc).
