Imre Földes was a Hungarian painter and graphic artist who was best known as a designer of posters and bookplates. At the age of 16 he studied at the Commercial Drawing School (Kereskedelmi Szakközépiskola) in Budapest. After a year he moved to the “Pattern Drawing School”, where he was taught by László Hegedüs and Tivadar Zemplény. He then studied in Berlin and Vienna and already developed a preference for poster art. After studying and traveling, he returned to Budapest and worked as a commercial artist. In 1910 he received positive criticism for his designs for the spring exhibition at the Budapest Art Gallery. In 1918 he founded a lithography workshop and art institute and began a collaboration with the artist Lipót Sátori. Földes created a series of film posters. In 1921 he moved to Romania and took over the typography Helikon in Timisoara as artistic director. He then moved to Oradea, where he got a job in the graphic studio of the company “Typografie Sonnenfeld” and designed book covers. He worked as an illustrator for the newspaper Nagyvárad and in 1927, together with Béla Zsigmond, opened a school for painting, graphics and poster art in the Apollo Palace. In 1931, together with Roman Paul Mottl and Jenő Iványi, he founded a school for decorative arts and applied arts in the Sonnenfeld Palace. In October 1933, Földes took part in the Young Artists Exhibition (Expozitia tinerilor artiști) at the Weiszlovits Palace in Oradea. In 1945 he returned to Budapest and worked as an artist until his death.
