An Eastern European silver, gilt-silver and enamel ciborium, circa 1620
A silver ciborium with gold, baroque pearl and enamel decoration: 507 g, 27,2 cm. Applied stylized foliage and soldier figures cover the oval-shaped, embossed foot, four olive trees form the tapering stem baluster embracing the scene of the flagellation of Christ. Among the stylized and meticulously elaborated hollow foliage the ball of the chalice depicts the scene of the arrest of Jesus at the peak of the Mount of Olives . The cover, which ends in Christ’s tomb, is decorated with floral motifs and sleeping soldiers. The gold-inlay and baroque-pearl decorated lid of the opened sarcophagus is crowned by Agnus Dei (God’s lamb). The chalice is gilt inside,
with a subsequent mark: S.L. No. 236, as well as inscribed year 1706.
South Germany, Early 17th century.
Contained in a latter, fitted leather case with the gilt crown of the Archduke,
supplied with the declaration of authenticity by Univ.Prof. Dipl.Ing. Dr. Manfred Schreiner, Academy of Fine Art, Vienna,
as well as a record of research inquiry by Palais Dorotheum and the Certificate given by Dorotheum.
Provenience:
Formerly in the possession of the Habsburg Dynasty.
