Hondius, Jodocus id. – Jansson, Jan: Freti Magellanici ac novi Freti vulgo Le Maire exactissima delineatio
Antwerpen, 1638.
One of the most decorative copper-engraved regional maps of the Strait of Magellan and its surrounding areas by Jan Jansson. The work covers the region from Patagonia to Tierra del Fuego. There is a noticeable uncertainty in the depiction of the interior of the mainland and the southwestern coast, where the blank spaces are filled in with hypothetical – but suggestive – coastlines or descriptions in several languages. One of these refers to the origin of the cartographic data, which can be traced back to Barent Jansz. Potgieter, who participated in the first Dutch expedition to map the Strait of Magellan in 1599 on a ship commanded by Captain Sebald de Weert, spent nine months in the area. The engraver illustrated the sheet with galleys and sea monsters, a pair of penguins, and a beautifully crafted compass rose. This, the detail of the coastlines and the numerous indicated rhumb lines give the section a subtle portolan map effect.
Dimensions: 385 x 500 (400 x 520) mm. A clear and robust impression on thick paper, which has undergone restoration along the centre line.
van der Krogt I.: 9950:1B., Koeman II.: Me 240.
