Herbert Brandl (1959–2025) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist who is considered an outstanding representative of the Neue Wilden. Born on January 17, 1959 in Graz, he studied from 1978 at the University of Applied Arts Vienna with Herbert Tasquil and Peter Weibel. His work is characterized by expressionistic colors and an interplay between abstraction and representational landscape representation, with the motif of the Austrian mountain landscape playing an important role. From the mid-1980s he became internationally known and took part in important exhibitions such as the Biennale de Paris (1985), the documenta IX in Kassel (1992) and the Biennale di Venezia (2007). From 2004 to 2019 he taught as a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Herbert Brandl died on July 27, 2025 in Vienna. His work is one of the most important in contemporary Austrian painting and is represented in important museums and collections.Further artists and styles: Gerhard Richter, Jasper Johns, Neue Wilde, Neo-Expressionism, Expressionism, Karl Horst Hödicke, Rainer Fetting, Siegfried Anzinger, Helen Frankenthaler
