16 leaves from the Nuremberg Chronicle (Schedel’s World Chronicle) related to Hungary.
(Nuremberg, 1493.)
The collection contains all leaves of the 1493 Nuremberg edition of the "Liber chronicarum" which are related to Hungary. Intertextual woodcuts are also visible in some of them - in addition to some chapters of our history. Among the persons depicted are Saint István and Gizella, Saint Kinga and Mátyás Hunyadi. The views show Szabács Castle and another fictitious Hungarian town. The first authentic view of Buda, which shows it in the time of King Matthias and is printed with two woodblocks, is of outstanding importance. The veduta depicting the city from the east appeared on pages 138-139 of the volume. According to the literature, it was created based on the work of the artists contributing to the volume, Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff.
The value of our piece is undoubtedly enhanced by the fact that it was compiled by László Gróf, a renowned map historian and collector who lived in Oxford. In addition to his academic merits, Gróf, who emigrated in 1956, was a tireless supporter of the cause of Transylvanian Hungarians until his death. He donated part of his collection to our national library, and a smaller collection enriches the Nádasdy Castle in Sárvár.
Modern half vellum in cloth case.
Poss.: With ex libris of László Gróf.
