Hugo Grotius (1583–1645) németalföldi államférfi, jogász. Legfontosabb munkája, a „De jure belli ac pacis” (A háború és béke jogáról) először 1625-ben jelent meg. Könyve az első mű, mellyel szerzője megteremtette a modern nemzetközi jog alapjait. Kötetünkben szerepel még a szerző több kisebb értekezése is, köztük a nemzetközi tengerjogról szóló „Dissertatio de Mari libero”. Grotius művének jelentőségét mutatja a kötetünk utolsó részében elhelyezett 216 oldalas Grotius-kommentár. A címlapon régi gyűjteményi bélyegzés, néhány ív leveleinek felső sarkán apró szúrágásnyomok.
