Zane Gray, eredeti nevén Pearl Gray, (1872. január 31. Zanesville, Ohio , USA – 1939. október 23., Altadena, Kalifornia), termékeny amerikai író, akinek az amerikai nyugatot ábrázoló romantikus regényei új irodalmi műfajt teremtettek. Gray fogorvosnak tanult, 1898 és 1904 között New Yorkban praktizált, amikor magánkiadásban megjelentette a nyugatot meghódító úttörők életről szóló regényét. ABetty Zane számos fölsfoglaló naplójának átolvasása után született. Úgy döntött, hogy felhagy a fogászattal, és 1905-ben publikálta A határ szellemét, amely bestseller lett. Gray ezt követően több mint 80 könyvet írt, amelyek közül több posztumusz kiadásban jelent meg.A század utolsó negyedében több mint 50 műve látott napvilágot.
