Ivan Goll (1891–1950) Párizsban élő német (franciául és németül alkotó) expresszionista költő, Kassák Lajos jó barátja. Egyike volt az európai avantgárd azon művészeinek, akik Chaplin korai filmjeiben elsősorban a groteszk látásmódot, éles társadalmi kritikát látták, ebben szellemi társuknak tekintették. E kötetében Goll az amerikai színész és rendező előtt tiszteleg, és ebben társra talált a kötethez kubista illusztrációkat készítő Fernand Léger (1881–1955) festő személyében, aki a világháborút követően éppen a film mint új médium felé fordult. (Első munkája a Ballett mécanique 1924-ben.)
