A szerző bencés szerzetes volt. A mű először 1803-ban jelent meg. Első kötetében a bencés rendet, és annak magyarországi kolostorait mutatja be, a második a premontrei, ciszterci és ágostonos rendházak, és a magyar területen működött lovagrendek (ispotályosok, templomosok, német lovagok...) itteni házainak történetét írja le. Az ötkötetesre tervezett mű további részei kéziratban maradtak.
