FRANS MASEREEL* (Blankenberge 1889 - 1972 Avignon)

Sailor, 1963
lithograph/paper 31 x 43,5 cm
signed Frans Masereel, dated 1963

SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 50 - 100
STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 50

Frans Masereel was born in Blankenberge, Belgium, in 1889 and is considered one of the most important graphic artists, painters and woodcutters of the 20th century. At the age of eighteen he began studying art at the École des Beaux-Arts in Ghent. From 1911 he lived in Paris and later in Switzerland, where he was active in pacifist circles and was in contact with well-known writers such as Stefan Zweig. Masereel became internationally known for his socially critical woodcut series and visual novels, including “My Book of Hours” and “The Sun,” which established a new form of wordless narrative. From the 1920s onwards he increasingly devoted himself to painting, especially watercolors and oil paintings showing nighttime cityscapes and coastal landscapes. After the Second World War he was a teacher at the “Centre des Métiers d'Art” in Saarbrücken and continued his artistic activity until the 1960s. Masereel's work represents a consistent humanism that addresses the fate of people in the modern world. He died in Avignon in 1972 and was buried in Ghent. His artistic significance is reflected not only in his works, but also in his commitment as the first president of the International Association of Woodcutters XYLON. Further artists and styles: Expressionism, woodcut, Stefan Zweig, Romain Rolland, Hermann Hesse, Bertolt Brecht, Käthe Kollwitz, George Grosz, Ernst Barlach, Lynd Ward, Otto Natzler, Hugo Gellert, Clément Serveau
PLEASE NOTE:
The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items.
The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
