ERWIN LANG* was an Austrian painter, graphic artist, illustrator, set designer, poster designer, and jewelry designer. As a painter, he mainly created depictions of people, initially close to Impressionism, Overall, graphic activities predominate. From 1903 to 1907, Lang studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts under Erich Mallina, Willibald Schulmeister, Alfred Roller, Rudolf von Larisch, Rosalia Rothansl, Leopoldine Guttmann, Carl Otto Czeschka and Bertold Löffler. As early as 1906 he was responsible for furnishing the theater in Josefstadt, specifically for the production of “Hannele’s Ascension”. As a result, further commissions to design stage sets arose in Vienna and Berlin, among others. 1913/1914 for Max Reinhardt. Lang was friends with Oskar Kokoschka and Franz von Zülow, and later also with Richard Billinger. In 1908 he exhibited graphic works in the “Kunstschau”, In 1911, he was represented for the first time in a special exhibition at the Hagenbund, together with Kokoschka, Schiele, Kolig and Faistauer. In 1910, Lang married the dancer Grete Wiesenthal, for whom he created posters and productions, She was also his favorite model at the beginning. In 1913, together with Felix Albreach Harta, he took over the organization of the International Black and White Exhibition (poster and catalog cover each by Erwing Lang). From 1914, Lang did military service.War service. He only returned from Russian captivity in 1920, after an adventurous escape via China. As a result, his works initially revealed influences from Chinese design. Lang created numerous graphic works, also in cycles, e.g. “Am Morgen” and “Grete Wiesenthal and her school” (both lithographs), or “Deutsche Dome” and “Michael Kohlhaas” (woodcuts). Lang also worked as a jewelry designer for his half-brother, the Viennese jeweler Erich Töpfert, and as a set designer for the Burgtheater. From 1924 to 1938, Lang was a member of the Hagenbund and from 1946 of the Vienna Secession. He was also a member of the Salzkammergut Artists' Guild and its president from 1946 to 1954. Lang designed the poster for the 52nd Hagenbund exhibition (V-VI/1926), Together with Robert Haas, he designed the poster for the memorial exhibition Lovis Corinth (XI-XII/1926 in the Hagenbund). In 1934 Lang took part in the Venice Biennale. From the second half of the 1920s he lived partly in Upper Austria, maintaining the Vienna studio. His works include: in the Belvedere, in the Albertina, in the Vienna Museum and in the Austrian Theater Museum Vienna. Honours, prizes (selection): 1922 Silver State Medal, 1933 Honorary Award from the City of Vienna, 1934 Prize from the Julius Reich Foundation, 1934 Austrian State Prize, 1935 awarded the title of professor.
