Emilio Tadini was an Italian painter, writer, poet, playwright, translator and journalist, and president of the Brera Academy of Fine Arts from 1997 to 2000. Tadini earned a degree in literature at Milan's Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. In 1947, at the age of 20, he had already worked in Elio Vittorini's magazine Il Politecnico, where he published "La passione secondo Matteo" (The Passion according to Matthew), which won him the Serra Prize. He then published essays, novels, poems and monologues. Among his writings, "La lunga notte" won the Premio Campiello in 1987. With "La tempesta", he won the Premio Nazionale Rhegium Julii and the Bergamo Prize. The most important works of the 20th century, by Stendhal, Pound, Eliot, Céline or Faulkner for publishers such as Einaudi and many others. He exhibited his first visual works in the 1960s. His first exhibition was in Venice at the Galleria del Cavallino, its first collector was the artist Tancredi. In 1978 and 1982 Tadnini was invited to the Venice Biennale. His artistic work developed in several cycles. Tadini was influenced by English Pop Art, the paintings of De Chirico and Picasso and developed a sophisticated, original, dreamlike visual language. In 1992 he began writing about art and literature for Corriere della Sera. In 1997 he was the author and presenter of the show Contesto on Tele+. From 2000 to 2001 he worked with the Swiss broadcaster RSI Cultural, but also with Rai. He became director of the Bagutta Prize and a member of the jury of the IX. Italo Calvino Prize in 1996. In 2001 his last retrospective took place in Milan at the Palazzo Reale. After Tadini's death, the Corriere della Sera Foundation organized the memorial conference "Le figure, le cose" in 2004 at the Palazzo Reale in Milan with personalities from culture, art and journalism such as Ferruccio de Bortoli, Umberto Eco, Paolo Fabbri. Tadini was commemorated in his memory A museum in Milan, Spazio Tadini, founded in 2008.
