A második világháborús német hadifogságot követően a Horthy-család a bajorországi Weilheim in Oberbayernben élt. A levélben szereplő Carl Lutz (Walzenhausen, 1895 – Bern, 1975) 1942-től 1945-ig Svájc budapesti alkonzulja volt, és több tízezer zsidót mentett meg a deportálástól. Nagy valószínűséggel az akkor már Zürichben szolgáló Lutz, akit az ifjabb Horthyné akkoriban többször felkeresett (erről ír és egy fényképet is közöl a memoárjában), segíthette a Horthy-család Portugáliába utazását.
