Dohnányi Ernő 1917-ben „frontális támadást” indít a magyar zeneélet begyöpösödött beállítottsága ellen. Ebben a harcban egyrészt népnevelő koncertekkel, a magyar zeneszerzők (Bartók, Kodály, Weiner stb.) darabjainak műsorra tűzésével vesz részt, másrészt zeneszerzőként az egy magyar népdalra írt variációival tisztázza hovatartozását.
