Dennis Stock was an American journalist and professional photographer. He completed his training with Gjon Mili. In 1951 he won first prize in a competition for young photographers run by Life magazine. In the same year he became an associate member of the Magnum photo agency. In 1954 he became a full partner member. One of his portraits of James Dean in New York's Times Square became an iconic image of the young star. From 1957 to the early 1960s, Stock aimed his camera at jazz musicians and photographed personalities such as Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Sidney Bechet, Gene Krupa, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis.
