de Jode, Gerard: Tertiae Partis Asiae...
Scarce map of Eastern Asia by Gerard de Jode published in the rare first edition of de Jode’s Speculum Orbis Terrae in 1578. Based on the 1561, 4-sheet map of Giacomo Gastaldi. The representation extends from Mongolia to the Philippines (from north to south), and from India to China (from west to east). The nomenclature is detailed – considering the possibilities available at the time – and the lack of geographical information is covered by depictions, topographic elements, and larger fonts. The engravers, Jan and Lucas van Deutecum added a finely decorated cartouche and a compass rose as illustration. Latin text on verso.
