Christian Marmorstein, also known as Christian "Criri" Marmoretti, is an Austrian sculptor, painter and graphic artist from Weidling. His large-format, mostly raw, rust-red steel sculptures in public spaces are particularly well known. In 2011, with his colleagues Georg Januszewski and Herbert Hackl, he erected a seven-meter-high sculpture entitled "Totem" at a roundabout in Klosterneuburg, which was controversially discussed in public. It represents a strongly rooted tree with branches on which all the churches of the seven cadastral communities belonging to Klosterneuburg are depicted. In the upper part of the tree, the communities surround the trunk in the form of a candlestick, the top represents the diversity of cultural directions. For marble stone, the totem symbolizes the past, present and future in equal measure. In 2019, the "Carnotaurus", also known as the "Mad Cow", was handed over to its spectacular purpose at the Uferhaus in Klosterneuburg: inside, a fire can be lit effectively. The self-taught Marmorstein experiments with oil paint in intensive colors and with ballpoint pens and colored pencils on colored paper, in search of simplified, abstract forms. The images he creates are a source of inspiration for his implementation in his steel sculptures.
