Chinae, olim Sinarum regionis, nova descriptio.
Unusually – with north to the right – oriented map of China, published in the 1592 Latin edition of Abraham Ortelius’ „Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”. Based on the reports and the manuscript map of the Portuguese cartographer, Luiz Jorge de Barbuda, it was the most accurate depiction of this region that had appeared on a printed map at the time. The richly illustrated work – one of the earliest representations to focus on this area – was the first that delineated the Great Wall of China and showed illustrations of several breeds of native animals, indigenous homes and wind-driven vehicles. The three embellished cartouches contain the royal privilege of publishing, the title of the map and the bar scale. Latin text – including some Chinese characters – on the back.
Dimensions: 365 x 475 (420 x 520) mm. Slightly discoloured at centrefold and some stains near to the upper left corner.
