China Veteribus Sinarum Regio nunc Incolis Tame dicta
Decorative map of China, Japan, Korea and the northern part of the Philippines. Published in the 1635 second Latin edition of Willem Janszoon Blaeu’s „Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, sive Atlas Novus”. The map contains several cartographic mistakes such as the Korean Peninsula shown as an island or the Japanese Hokkaido completely missing, and an imaginary lake (called „Chiamay Lacus”) placed in India. Out of the two large, decorative cartouches one shows the title and the other contains the dedication to Theodore Bas, director of the United East India Company (with a carefully elaborated coat of arms and the publishers, Joan and Cornelis Blaeu’s names). The map field is decorated with European galleons and sampans, and even the Great Wall of China can be seen in the northwest. Latin text on verso.
Dimensions: 410 x 495 (460 x 530) mm. Fine, clear copy.
