Ceremonial Sceptre
19th century, on the top of the iron rod of a square cross-section there is a brass female figure; a little brass roller decorated with a bird's head is fixed to the rod approximately in the middle. The figure stretches from the brass base decorated with a target both from the back and front. The bird's head represents most likely a hornbill, which symbolises fertility in the neighbouring region. The edges of the rod are notched. The rod is forged, brass parts are cast using the lost wax method Length (total) 83 cm, (figure) 13.5 cm Height (roller) 5 cm, width (bird's head) 4.5 cm. Provenance: the Bobo tribe (Burkina Faso), Starting Price: CZK 38,000; USD 1,113; EUR 1,264, Estimated price: (42,000 - 46,000) CZK., These kinds of scepters could be found in an area that stretches from the Republic of Guinea to northern Ghana and southern Mali. Their origin is linked with the existence of the Mali Empire whose roots go back to the 13th century. Some scepters have attached spear spikes on the bottom end. They are definitely things of political and religious power that are closely connected with a certain region, therefore they are considered to be precious ritual insignia.
