Large world map showing the magnetic variations of the compass by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin. It was Edmund Halley and William Dampier who began scientific research to advance the accurate maritime navigation, and Halley published his magnetic declination map in 1702. Later, the French Ministry of the Navy (Ministère de la Marine) instructed Bellin to update the chart. From a nautical perspective, the map focuses on the Atlantic and Indian Oceans because of the French influence in the West Indies, and besides the hydrographic information, small wind heads are also depicted indicating the dominant direction of the wind. The title is placed in a cartouche decorated with large floral motives and at its top, a globe can be seen with the French crown. Dimensions: 545 x 875 (640 x 900) mm. With some water stains.
