James Carcass (1965): Blackholes
walnut, limestone base
45 cm
s.b.: J Carcass 2019

"Wood is often described as a living material, the product of natural growth with each piece displaying an infinitely complex character. When creating a sculpture from a block of wood the natural qualities of the material must be worked with and therefore a dialogue is entered into between the original artistic concept and the qualities of the material.
This dialogue forms the essence of the sculptural path I follow and therefore the resulting objects. The objects represent a form of Biomorphic abstraction of natural phenomena which can be on the scale of birds or animals or, in contrast, cosmic events such as galaxies or Black holes.
The wooden sculptures are presented on a geometrically precise block of stone which acts as a contrast of material and form and acts as an isolating environment for the sculpture".
