Pesten, 1793. Trattner Mátyás. 1pl(s). (copper engraved frontispiece)+XII+297p. First edition.
In the early 1790s, Ferenc Kazinczy – who had connections with the Jacobin movement – was prompted by his increasingly radical social criticism to translate Christoph Martin Wieland’s work. The Viennese censorship initially rejected, then later permitted its publication, but the Royal Council of Lieutenancy confiscated the published book as incitement against society.
Signed, deep blue leather, with white title label on spine. The front cover decorated with a leather inlay of Diogenes, the back with his attribute, the dog. In hardpaper case.
Dimensions: 175 × 110 mm.
Provenance: “Eötvös Józsefé 1810.”, with ownership stamp of Gábor Kátai.
