CVI, [1] 696 p. 3 térkép (kihajtható). Szövegközti képekkel. „Payer Gyula lovag, osztrák északsarki utazó, a bécsi katonai akadémia tanára. Petermann által indítva 1869–70. a második német sarkexpedícióban vett részt és keleti Grönlandban a Ferenc-József-fjordot fedezte fel és a belső Grönlandnak alpesi jellegét állapította meg. Miután 1871. Weyprechttel a sarktenger kutatása céljából Spitzbergától keletre expedíciót indított, s az É. sz. 79 fokig hatolt, mindketten a nagy osztrák sarkexpedíciót rendezték, és a Tegetthoff gőzösön 1872 jun. 13. elhagyták Bremerhavent. A hajó Novaja-Zemljában befagyott, de Payer szánon 1872 aug. 31. felfedezte a Ferenc-József-földet s 1874 tavaszán az É. sz. 83 fokig hatolt.” (A Pallas Nagy Lexikona) Kiadói, festett és aranyozott, egészvászon (H.
