Agrippa, Henricus Cornelius ab Nettesheim: ~ De incertitudine & vanitate scientiarum declamatio invectiva, denuo ab autore recognita, & marginalibus annotationibus aucta. Capita tractandorum totius operis, sequentes indicant pagellae.
(Köln), 1539. (Eucharius Cervicornus.) (415)p. With woodcut portrait on the title page.
Agrippa, German humanist, physician, astrologer and occult philosopher, first published this satirical attack on the vanity of the sciences in 1531, it was reissued several times through the century. He served successively as court physician to Emperor Maximilian I, King Francis I of France, and Margaret of Austria, governess of the Low Countries (widow of King Louis II of Hungary). His lifelong attraction to magic and the occult sciences eventually brought him charges of heresy and imprisonment.
Blindstamped, dated, contemporary leather with the owner’s initials.
