Kolozsvártt, 1860. Ev. Reform. Főtanoda ny. (4)+56p.
Liszt’s book Des Bohémiens et de leur musique en Hongrie, published a year earlier in French, provoked a storm of controversy by suggesting that so-called gypsy music was of Indian origin. Amid the national oppression of the time this claim caused an outcry in Hungary. The most important reply was this work by Brassai, often called the last Transylvanian polymath. He attempted to prevent a Hungarian edition of Liszt’s book, but in vain – it appeared the following year (see lot 329).
Modern hardpaper. Original cover bound inside.
