[J. Braid (1795-1860) skót orvos, sebész, a hipnózis felfedezője. Praxisa során rájött, hogy ideges betegeit "elaltatva" (huzamos ideig egy csillogó tárgyat figyeltetett velük), azok nem érzik a fájdalmat. A hipnózisban kisebb műtéteket is fájdalommentesen végzett el. Módszerét sokan vizsgálták és követték, kialakítva a hipnózis különféle módjait. Tapasztalatairól számos munkát írt. A kötet utolsó fejezetének címe: dr. Völgyesi F. jegyzetei a tudományos hipnotizmus és a "braidizmus" 100 esztendős távlatából.]
