Bene Ferenc (1775-1858) orvosprofesszor. Orvosi tanulmányait a pesti orvosi karon végezte, ahol 1798. szeptember 4-én orvosdoktori oklevelet szerzett. 1803-ban a különös kór és gyógytan professzora is lett. 1806-ban a városi (Szent Rókus) kórház igazgatójává és Pest város főorvosává is kinevezték. 1831-től a Magyar Tudományos Akadémia tagja, 1825-től királyi tanácsos, 1840-ben a Lipót-rend kiskeresztjének kitüntetettje. Rendkívül nagyműveltségű és világot látott orvostanár volt, aki 1807-ben félévet Franciaországban, 1808-ban két hónapot Berlinben, 1828-ban fél évet Angliában töltött, megkeresve az ottani egyetemeket, orvos- és egészségigazgatási hivatalokat.
Életének főműve az Elementa medicinae practicae címet viselte, 1833-tól öt kötetben jelent meg, utolsó kötetét már fiával, ifjabb Bene Ferenccel írta. Mai értelemben belgyógyászati tankönyv, amelyben elméleti kérdések kifejtése mellett saját gyakorlatának eseteit is részletesen tárgyalta, de széles szakirodalmi műveltségének is tükre: számtalan esetet hoz fel mások - szakirodalomból olvasott - gyakorlatából, pontosan megjelölve azok irodalmi forrásait. A harmadik kötetben néhol régi, ceruzás aláhúzások, bejegyzések. Győry 78. old. Wurzbach I, 265. Hirsch I, 388. Egységes, korabeli, kissé kopott papírkötésben, gerincén aranyozott címkével. A harmadik kötet gerincéről a címke hiányzik. Jó példány.
