Ariosto (olasz költő, író,1474-1533) „Örjöngő Lóránd”-ja a Nagy Károly mondakör elemeit használta föl, amikor a két szálon futó szerelmi történet hátteréül a keresztények és szaracénok küzdelmeit választotta. A nagy művet 1507 től 1532-ig többször is átdolgozta és bővítette.
