A kötet Arany János 24 balladáját tartalmazza Zichy Mihály (1827–1906) rajzaival. Az összeállítás először 1895–1898 között Ráth Mór kiadásában négy kötetben látott napvilágot. Jellemzője, hogy csak ebben a kiadásban vannak szövegközi rajzok. Jelen kiadásban a teljes négy kötet anyaga kerül az olvasók kezébe.
