Sylvester János erazmista bibliafordító és a magyar nyelv első tudományos rendszerezője volt. A krakkói és a wittenbergi egyetemen végzett tanulmányai után 1534-től Nádasdy Tamás sárvári iskolájában, 1543-tól pedig a bécsi egyetemen tanított. E művét már a XVIII. századi könyvészeti kézikönyvek (pl. Wallaszky) számontartották! A hazai szakirodalomban elsőként Weszprémi István ismertette részletesen.
