First Edition! The most important work of the French architect, Le Roy (1724-1803) was made upon a rivalry. Two English architects, Stuart and Revett were researched since 1748 in Athens to explore the ancient ruins. Le Roy had spent only three months in the Greek capital and after that he carried out some quick research in Constantinople and Rome, he then published his book before the two Englishman, in 1758. The English scientists released their studies only in 1762, but immediately pointed out the superficial observations of the French author. The Franco-British conflict, does not devalue the Le Roy volume. The engravings were made by the most renowned French artists; some of the pictures illustrate the ruins of the Greek capital, like as a Piranesi artwork.
The Neo-Classicist French architecture used the book as an inspirational source quite often. Nowadays this publication is very popular on the antique market, because of its rarity and its artistic value. During the making of our catalogue, we’ve found a copy to purchase for 11000€. As we know, the book has not appeared on a Hungarian auction since.
Repaired rootlet, contemporary leather binding, the corners are worn, but the pages and the engravings are clean and they are in an excellent condition.
