Válogatott részletek Montesquieu írásaiból. Név nélkül közzétette Alexandre Deleyre, akit még maga Montesquieu mutatott be az enciklopédistáknak. Montesquieu nemcsak jogi, politikaelméleti és morális kérdésekről írt munkái, hanem rövidebb históriai portrék is szerepelnek a kötetben (például Attiláról, Nagy Károlyról, Richelieu bíborosról), és külön fejezetek fejtegetik a rabszolgaságról, a háborúról, a nőkről vallott nézeteit is.
