Czvittinger Dávid (1675 körül–1743) munkásságával kezdődik a
magyar irodalomtudomány. Németországi egyetemeken tanult, tanulmányait
az aldorfi egyetemen fejezte be. Magnus Daniel
Ameis, a költészettan tanára keltette fel leginkább érdeklődését az
irodalomtörténet iránt, és általa ismerkedett meg azokkal a történelemtudományi
és irodalmotudományi munkákkal, melyek az
irodalmi rendszerezésénél későbbi mintái lettek. Munkájához a
közvetlen indítékot Reimman Jakab Frigyes német evangélikus lelkész
és tudós a magyar irodalmat lekicsinylő nyilatkozata adta, de
ezen túl is, el akarta oszlatni azt a tájékozatlanságot, melyet Német-
országban a magyar tudományos viszonyok felől tapasztalt. Latin
nyelven írt lexikonában 269 magyarországi születésű író adatait szedte össze betűrendben.
