Zaltieri, Bolognini Hollandiae batavor(um) veteris insulae et locorum adiacentium exacta descriptio
Venice, 1567.
Scarce, copper engraved map of Holland. It was published by Bolognini Zaltieri and sold as part of IATO-atlases. The depiction was based on Jacob van Deventer’s work. The original copy is believed to have been compiled around 1537 and printed somewhat later, although there is no surviving example. The single example of a later edition – published in nine sheets in 1558, in Antwerp –, that survived in Breslau, was also destroyed during the Second World War, so our item – dated 1567 – represents one of the earliest editions of Deventer’s map. The cartographer was among the first ones who used the triangulation technique – which theory was described by Gemma Frisius, one of his teachers – to improve the accuracy of the charts. The engraver, Girolamo Olgiato decorated the map field with a strapwork-surrounded title cartouche, two coats of arms and several galleons. He placed a nautical chart divider with linear scales under it.
Fine, clear copy.
