Augspurg, 1684. Jacob Koppmayer. 1 folding pl(s).+(8)+161+(7)p.+41 folding pl(s).+2 folding map(s).
A description of Hungary and the European part of the Ottoman Empire, one of the most spectacular pieces of its kind. First edition, revised and republished a year later, expanded with an additional volume. The decorative, fold-out copperplate engravings show Hungarian castles (Pozsony, Győr, Komárom, Tata, Pápa, Fehérvár, Buda, Esztergom, Kanizsa, Kassa, Érsekújvár, Tokaj, Nógrád, Pannonhalma, Eger, Fülek, Vác), appx(s). Belgrade, Drinápoly, Jerusalem, Vienna, and Szabács, Eastern landmarks (the Holy Sepulchre, the Tower of Babel, etc.), warships, the battle formation of the Battle of Lepanto, and famous people (Leopold I, Mehmed IV, the Tatar Khan) and events (the coronation, the execution of the Grand Vizier), as well as exotic plants. The two maps depict Hungary and the Turkish Empire. Within the page numbering, there are full-page woodcuts depicting Turkish soldiers, and smaller ones depicting African and Asian animals. A rare work (Apponyi only had the second edition), a complete copy has not appeared at auction for almost 20 years.
Restored, stained, contemporary vellum. Some leaves and plates with minor spotting.
