Typus Orbis Terrarum.
Contemporary coloured, engraved world map published in the 1595 Latin edition of Abraham Ortelius’ „Theatrum Orbis Terrarum” and one of the most well-known depictions ever made. The sheet represents the continents on oval projection (used by Apian), centred on the Atlantic Ocean and cartographically based on works of Gerard Mercator, Giacomo Gastaldi and Diego Gutiérrez. Our copy is the third state of the plate with improved coastline of South America and appearance of the Solomon Isles. The map includes the cartographic mistakes of this age (though, California is shown as a peninsula) like the massive southern continent (and Tierra del Fuego as the part of it), the unknown northern continent and the Northwest Passage to the south from it, the hypothetical depiction of Japan, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and the isles of Southeast Asia. The engraver – Frans Hogenberg – illustrated his work with a galleon and sea monsters and added several embellished cartouches: one for the title of the map, the others for quotes from Cicero and Seneca. Latin text on the back.
Dimensions: 355 x 490 (430 x 535) mm. Small, restored tear at the bottom, slightly affecting the border. Apart from this, fine copy.
