378. Artikel
Miklós Szemere (1802–1881), poet. Autograph letter to Sándor Mednyánszky, addressed as „Édes Sándorom!” (My dear Sándor).
Written throughout in witty, anecdotal style, the letter begins with his acceptance of Mednyánszky’s offer of lodging. He plans a visit in May, hoping the weather will not be too hot: “For perhaps the icy storm of the Deák party will chill even nature itself: You men of the left will sweat, but the homeland will freeze.” He speaks of his illnesses, again with humour: “Whoever could not fall in love with me now, seeing my visage swathed nightly in kerchiefs, fit for an old hag – I cannot imagine whom he could fall in love with.” He mentions Ferenc Deák with biting irony: “Deák would again declare that he adhered to his earlier policy with fire and sword. Noble! To wear sheepskin all his life, and then at the first chance throw it off and pounce like a wolf on the German who trusted him unconditionally!” In a long passage he attacks the left-wing deputies who betrayed their cause, naming Count Ede Károlyi among others. The letter closes with sarcastic remarks about a friend’s religious faith.
