Napoleon (Bonaparte – Batsányi János): Proclamation – Proclamatio – Proclamatio
(Schönbrunn, 1809.) n.p. 1 leaf, folded.
Trilingual (French–German–Hungarian) proclamation.
Napoleon marched into Vienna on May 13, 1809. Two days later, in Schönbrunn, he issued his appeal to the Hungarian nobility to secede from Austria. In return, he promised complete independence. János Batsányi, who saw the emperor as the guarantor of his principles, translated the text at the request of a fellow prisoner in Kufstein, adding to it and rewriting it in a slightly more radical tone. As a result, he had to flee after the French withdrew from Vienna and the peace treaty was signed. He went to Paris, where he became a French official and received an annual pension from the French government for the rest of his life. After Napoleon's fall, he surrendered to the invading Austrians and was imprisoned again.
Dimensions: 530×430 mm. Slightly stained.
