Leo Belgicus
Extremely rare, contemporary coloured, lion-shaped map of Belgium and the most famous example of the cartographic expression of national pride. Published in Pieter van den Keere’s atlas („Germania Inferior...”, 1617). Based on the 1583 work of Michael von Aitzing, who used Frans Hogenberg’s engraving as an illustration of his book „De Leone Belgico...” on the Dutch War of Independence. The engraver – Hendrik Floris van Langren – deco¬rated the page with the coat of arms of the 17 provinces, three couples dressed in the characteristic costumes of the regions – Friesland, Holland and Belgium –, galleons, a sea monster and a large double cartouche. This state was probably published by Cornelis Claesz before 1609 (only two copies are known). After Claesz’s death, the copper plate ended up with van den Keere, who changed the name of the engraver to his own, modified the frame design and added a bar scale connecting to the existing cartouches. French text on verso. Our item – a 2nd-state copy – is one of the most beautiful and well-known maps and it can be a valued piece of any collection. Dimensions: 370 x 450 (410 x 500) mm. Fine, clear, coloured copy.
