Le Clerc, Jean: Anglia, Regnum si quod aliud in toto Oceano ditissimum et florentissimum
Paris, 1605.
First state of a rare, copper-engraved map of England and Wales by Jean Le Clerc. The cartographic basis of this beautiful sheet was Christopher Saxton’s regional depiction of 1579 (the cartographer is named in one of the cartouches). Saxton was commissioned to systematically survey and map the region in the 1570s, resulting in the first complete atlas of England and Wales, titled “Atlas of the Counties of England and Wales”. The engraving features three cartouches. The title field is surrounded by a grandiose frame dominating the right side and decorated with plant ornaments, putti, and satyrs, while the other two contain the bar scale, the reference to Saxton, and Le Clerc’s signature. The engraver illustrated the work with a sea battle off the coast of Cornwall, and at the northern part of the island of Ireland featured the crowned coat of arms of Elizabeth I, framed by the symbol of the Order of the Garter with its motto: “Hony soit qui mal y pense.” Since the printed copies were sold as individual sheets or as part of composite atlases, due to the harsh storage conditions, most of the surviving copies are – unlike our piece – in particularly poor condition.
