372. Artikel
György Kmety (1813-1865), former general during the Hungarian War of Independence in 1848-1849. Autograph letter to Sándor Mednyánszky, addressed as „Kedves Barátom Sándor” (My dear friend Sándor).
From the Isle of Wight he writes to London, where he had gone for rest. He describes his lodgings, then relates his visit to Portsmouth harbour, where he examined the fortifications and attended manoeuvres involving 3000 infantry and artillery. This is of interest since later that year he sent a report to the Ottoman government on the state of the British army, suggesting this journey had a dual purpose. He asks for news from Turkey, and requests information about events at “Chepstow Place” (his London address). He sends regards to Mednyánszky’s wife and thanks her mother, Mrs Birkbeck. He inquires about Sebő Vukovics and Jácint Rónay, and in a postscript mentions a certain Garabed Effendi.
