Coloured pannotype depicting an unknown lady.
The image, made with a photographic process that was rarely used for only a few decades, was probably born in the territory of Austria or the German Empire around 1860. The young woman is sitting on a chair, leaning on a table with her right hand with a handkerchief in her left. Her dress and the flowers in the vase on the table were coloured with a sophisticated technique by an unknown artist, who even highlighted her model’s jewellery with a touch of gilding. The pannotype is a direct positive image recording process used in photography. The photo is transferred from a wet-collodion-on-glass negative to a waxed canvas support material. The technique, patented by the Parisian company Wulff & Co. in 1858, was unsuitable for making a high-quality result. Since the finished image was highly fragile due to the flexible wax canvas base, it was only used sporadically (mainly by anonymous wandering photographers). Due to the short time used by the method, pannotypes are pretty rare. Despite the type’s vulnerability, our copy is in good condition. Although, like most surviving pieces, it is netted by fine hairline cracks, the frame’s glass protected our copy from further damage, the value of which is enhanced by the delicate colouring of the recording. The photo was placed behind a thin, embossed, gilt copper plate with an oval cutout.
Dimensions: 130 x 95 mm. Framed.
