A very early work by the philosopher (a few shorter essays had been published the previous year). According to tradition, the inspiration for this lyrical essay was the linden tree still standing today in the Koloska Valley in Balatonfüred. The rarity of this piece is further enhanced by the inscription on the title page: „Kövendi Dénesnek barátsággal Hamvas Béla” (To Dénes Kövendi with friendship. Béla Hamvas). The dedicatee was a renowned classical philologist and, like Hamvas, a member of the Circle of the Island founded by Károly Kerényi.
