Ganz Beschreibung

The addressee was Ferenc Kubinyi, paleontologist and member of parliament. Eötvös expresses his regret that his friend (whom he addresses informally) wishes to resign from his position as president of the natural sciences committee. At the time (March 18), the writer of the letter was president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the recipient had been president of the Committee on Mathematics and Natural Sciences until 1870. Kubinyi had complained of irregularities in the Losonc elections, but the election committee upheld the mandate of his opponent, Count László Czebrián. Eötvös urges him at length not to change his decision, but not to reject his friendship and not to abandon him in their joint political struggle. He concluded with the following words: "And now allow me to... express my sincere respect, which I, as a patriot, one of the oldest and best champions of our constitutional struggles, and as a human being, have for a man with whom I may differ in certain views, but whom I have always considered to be among the best, and will always consider to be among the best, even if he revokes my right to call him my friend." The letter may have had the desired effect, as Kubinyi remained in office until 1870.
