Ganz Beschreibung

Frankfurt, 1592.
An early copper-engraved map of South America and the southern part of North America, published in the third part of Theodor de Bry's Grand Voyages series of maps of the Americas. It has several cartographic precedents, so that for North America it is based on Jacques la Moyne's depiction of Florida (also published by de Bry in 1591), and for South America it is influenced by the map of Peter Martyr and the works of Giacomo Gastaldi. The top left corner of the page shows two finely crafted coats of arms on the left of King Philip II of Spain, surrounded by the Order of the Golden Fleece, and on the right of the first Bourbon monarch of France, Henry IV, surrounded by the chain of the Order of Saint Michael. The engraver illustrated the sheet with two additional compass roses, a sea monster, and a galley. A putto holds the ribbon-style title, while one of the two other beautiful baroque cartouches contains a precise description of the region and the imprint. The one on the right describes the scale (without barscale), using the degree scale.
Dimensions: 365×445 (390×465) mm. Slightly toned, clean impression with a small marginal repair.
Burden: 80 (1st state).
