Blaeu, Willem Janszoon: Italiae, Sardiniae, Corsicae, et confinium Regionum nova Tabula…
Amsterdam, 1606.
The first edition of the first spectacular, copper-engraved “carte-a-figures” map of Italy (see lot 145) by Willem Janszoon Blaeu. In his cartography, he relied on Mercator’s 1589 Italy, and for the cityscapes of the beautiful baroque frame decoration, he reduced the size of the engravings of Braun-Hogenberg’s “Civitates Orbis Terrarum”, with one exception. The depiction of Rome, which dominates the middle of the upper border, was based on Hendrick van Cleef’s monumental five-page work, published by Henricus Hondius in The Hague. Four vignettes surrounding the two sides of the sheet show the traditional costumes of different Italian regions, and there are views of Venice, Genoa, Florence, and Naples in the four corners. The engraver of the decorative elements of the frame decoration and the map field, Hessel Gerritsz illustrated the work with ships, depicting a naval battle, two cartouches, and a simple compass rose. The imprint details are on the right side, at the bottom frame line, the verso is blank. Four states of the engraving are known, all of which are exceptionally rare.
Dimensions: 410 x 565 (510 x 815) mm. As part of a contemporary composite atlas, the sheet is cropped around the frame line and paper-backed. Professionally restored.
