Budapest egyik legrégibb nagyüzeme volt az Óbudai Hajógyár. Gróf Széchenyi István kezdeményezésére jött létre 1835-ben, amikor az 1829-ben alapított Első Duna-gőzhajózási Társaság (Erste Donau-Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft) az Óbudai-szigetet megszerezte. Az itt készült első hajót – az Árpád oldalkerekes, fatestű gőzhajót – 1836-ban bocsátották vízre.
