First published in serial form in Nemzet in April 1888, and again in Pesti Hírlap in September of the same year (September 4–6). The manuscript contains numerous corrections and revisions, notably, the main character, György Nyéky, was originally named Tamás Bosnyák. On the last leaf a small correction and slight text loss appear, and the final two lines of the story are missing.
